Advancements in Alzheimer’s Disease Research: Progress at the National Institute on Aging

Lisbeth Nielsen, PhD, is director of the Division of Behavioral and Social Research (BSR) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA). BSR supports transdisciplinary social, behavioral, psychological, and economic research on the processes of aging at the individual and societal level to elucidate how behavioral and social factors influence health and well-being in mid-life and older age. BSR supports NIA’s behavioral and social research programs on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including research on health disparities, care, prevention, epidemiology, and assessment of AD-related functional and psychological change.

Marvin Chun, PhD
Marvin M. Chun is the Richard M. Colgate Professor of Psychology at Yale University, with secondary appointments in the Cognitive Science Program and the Yale School of Medicine Department of Neuroscience. From 2017-2022, he served as Dean of Yale College. Professor Chun received his B.A. in Psychology from Yonsei University (South Korea), Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his postdoctoral training at Harvard University. His research has been honored with a Troland Award from the US National Academy of Sciences, an early-career award from the American Psychological Association, and a Ho-Am Science Prize from Samsung (South Korea). His teaching has been recognized with both the Lex Hixon ’63 Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences and the Phi Beta Kappa William Clyde DeVane Medal for Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching in Yale College.

Outstanding Postdoctoral Conference Travel AwardDeadline: August 15

Postdoctoral fellows completing a fellowship in clinical neuropsychology and those that will be a postdoctoral fellow at the time of the conference are eligible to apply for one of ten $500 scholarship awards to use towards travel/attendance at the NAN Conference.

Edith Kaplan Scholarship Award | Deadline: July 15

The Women in Leadership (WIL) Committee is pleased to announce the Fourteenth Annual Edith Kaplan Scholarship Award.

WHO: All student members (post-graduate, graduate, or undergraduate) who have not previously received this scholarship are eligible to apply for the 2024 WIL Edith Kaplan Scholarship. Applications from both women and men are welcomed and encouraged. Recipients are expected to assist with the registration desk at the WIL Event at the annual conference in Austin. Scholarship recipients will receive: Free registration for the WIL Event and  $450 to defray travel expenses. 

WHAT: In order to apply, please submit a 500-word (min) to 1000 word (max) essay on the following topic:

“Mentorship is one of the most important facilitators of professional development. As the number of women in neuropsychology continues to rise, effective mentors will be tasked with addressing issues unique to women. As a current mentee who may one day hold a mentorship role, what are some of the issues that you feel are important for mentors to address with female students? What are some challenges that might arise, and how might you navigate them?”

WHEN: Please submit your application no later than 5:00 p.m. EST on Monday July 15, 2024.

WIL Sponsorship Program | Deadline: September 2

The Women in Leadership (WIL) Committee of NAN is pleased to announce an opportunity for promising graduate students or postdoctoral fellows to shadow “behind the scenes” conference activities and spend one-to-one time with leaders in the field of neuropsychology. The WIL Sponsorship Program has identified several leaders who have agreed to share a few hours of their time during the annual NAN conference. If selected (typically 3-5 selected), your sponsor will contact you prior to the conference, as an introduction. You will meet your sponsor at the NAN conference, including time for informal one-to-one conversation and the opportunity to meet some of your sponsor’s colleagues. All genders welcome.

Past participants have described this opportunity as informative and encouraging. If interested, please complete the attached application. Provide a brief (2-3 sentences) description of your interest in this Sponsorship Program and rank the topics you would most like to discuss with a sponsor. The application must be accompanied by names and contact information for two recent supervisors who can describe 1) your professional interests, 2) your strengths and accomplishments, and 3) your potential for success in neuropsychology.
