Title: Responsiveness of magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological assessment in memory clinic patients
Type: journal article

Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, 40, 409-418.
Utility: Study found that neuropsychological assessment is superior to MRI volumetrics (hippocampal atrophy and cortical thickness) in detecting change over 2 years’ time, owing this to the precise, reliable measurement that removes variance from other factors as compared to a less precise measurement of hippocampal integrity via Freesurfer. Estimated sample sizes required for detecting 50% reduction in rate of change was also substantially less for neuropsychological assessment than for MRI volumetrics. Findings may assist with developing study design for pharmaceuticals for MCI and dementia.

Title: Presymptomatic cognitive decline in familial frontotemporal dementia: A longitudinal study.

Neurology, 87, 384-391.
Utility: Individuals with and without genetic mutations associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) were tested twice with a two year interval. Findings suggest that MAPT carriers were more impacted over time than those with GRN mutation, with MAPT carriers showing declines in social cognition, categorical fluency, and a mental processing speed task. Multilevel linear regression modeling suggested that cognitive decline occurred about 8 years prior to symptom onset in those with mutations, thus confirming the prognostic value of neuropsychological testing in families with familial FTD.

Utility: A panel of five experienced psychiatrists made determinations of capacity to consent to treatment and to appoint a proxy for patients diagnosed with possible or probable Alzheimer’s disease. Determinations were significantly predicted by conceptualization, initiation, and memory performance. Individual judges’ determinations of capacity varied considerably.

Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering. 9(6):508-512.
Utility: The present study provides preliminary evidence for the utility of the Mini-Mental State Examination-Second Edition: Expanded Version as a brief cognitive screening tool in a Romanian population. Case studies provide illustrative examples for a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, and additional benefits of annual screening are briefly discussed.

Title: A memory clinic v. traditional community mental health team service: comparison of costs and quality
Type: Journal Article

BJPsych Bull, 39(1), 6-11.
Utility: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of designated memory clinic services (MCS) versus community mental health teams (CMHT), particularly regarding both cost and quality of care. Findings indicated that specific MCS care was equivalent in cost to traditional CMHT services. The MCS was found to have more multi-disciplinary treatment services than the CMHT. Although both the MCS and CMHT offered good quality diagnostic services, the authors argued that the MCS provided more comprehensive resources (i.e., more extensive cognitive evaluations, lab work for reversible causes of dementia, etc.).
